Preparing for a house move can seem VERY daunting, but with our checklist and of course - a professional removals partner, it can be a smooth and pretty stress-free process.

We've compiled essential steps drawn from our 40 years of moving experience to help you transition into your new home seamlessly.

Essential Moving House Checklist

1. Book a Removals Company:

   Secure your date with a professional removals company (like Lyons) early to avoid last-minute hassles, limited availability etc. The best time to do this is 1. Enquire to get your quote as early as possible. 2. Contact your chosen removals company as soon as you put your phone down to your solicitor on exchange agreements to confirm and book your quote.
   

2. Declutter:

   Sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or sell...anything you take that you don't need makes your move bigger and in turn costs you more.
   

3. Start Packing Early:

   Begin with items you use less frequently and label boxes clearly by room and contents. (If you book a professional removals company, ask them about their box borrowing scheme or how much they charge to purchase good quality moving boxes. They should offer one or the other service - if not both.)
   

4. Notify Utilities:

   Arrange for your utilities to be transferred, cancelled or set up at your new address ahead of the move. (Don't forget your pets microchips!)
   

5. Change Your Address:

   Update your address with banks, employers and subscription services.
   

6. Pack an Essentials Box:

   Include items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new house, like toiletries, medications, and chargers (don't forget the loo roll).
   

7. Confirm Moving Details:

   Be proactive and check in with your removals company and your solicitor a week before the move to confirm times and addresses.
   

8. Prepare Appliances:

   Ensure that large appliances are clean and ready to be moved.
   

9. Plan for Pets and Children:

   Arrange for pet care or child care on moving day to simplify logistics. (If you put your pets behind a closed door in the house - make sure that room is empty and put a sticky note on the door to ensure it stays closed until the final minute)
   

10. Final Walk-Through: Do a final inspection of your old home to ensure nothing is left behind.
    

11. Once the money transfers it's no longer yours.

    A common mistake we see, even after completing this whole checklist well in advance is people not leaving their properties on time. To avoid holding up the chain on the day and being billed waiting time from your vendors. Make sure you are on your way out of the door no later than 1pm.
